Abstract

A lock stitch sewing machine is convertible to chain stitching by mounting a looper on a feed-control lever pivoted about a vertical axis. Work feed. A vertical shaft 15. driven by gears 13, 14 from a rotary shaft 12, carries a crank pin 11 connected by a link 10 to one end of a lever 7 pivoted intermediately on a fixed vertical pin 8. The other end of lever 7 is connected by links 17. 18 to an intermediate point on a lever 20 pivoted at one end on a fixed pin 21 and carrying at its other end an upstanding pin 23 slidably receiving a plate 24 provided with .feed does 6, whereby horizontal movement is imparted to the latter. When pins 43. 44 are positioned at the right hand ends of slots 41, 42, end 38 can co-operate with the thread loop seized by beak 29 from the needle 2 and carried around the bobbin casing 32, to form chain stitching in conjunction with needle 2. For lock stitching, end 38 is positioned inoperatively when pins 43, 44 engage the right hand ends of slots 41, 42.
