Abstract
931,360. Tufting machines. SINGERCOBBLE Inc. May 8, 1962 [May 31, 1961], No. 17570/62. Class 112. [Also in Group VIII] Cut pile is produced by a tufting-machine in accordance with a predetermined pattern by cutting each loop either substantially at its centre to provide a tuft with legs of substantially equal length, or at a point removed from its centre to provide a tuft with legs of markedly different length. As shown, an oscillating looper hook 16 has a loop-seizing beak 23, one side of which has a lower edge 25 adapted to co-operate with an edge 26 of an oscillating loop-cutting blade 19. The other side of blade 23 has a cut-away portion 27 extending between a shoulder 28 situated near the point 24, and a shoulder 29 extending downwardly at the other end. A finger 30 is pivoted midway at 31 in cutaway portion 27 and is biased by a spring 34, whereby its lower edge normally abuts the upper edge 33 of shoulder 29 and is positioned parallel to and somewhat below the lower edge 25 of blade 23. The yarn 37 is fed to the needle 12 by pattern-controlled two-speed means, as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,966,866. At the low feeding speed the yarn tension is sufficient to swing finger 36 upwardly till its lower edge is juxtaposed with the lower edge 25 of blade 23. A short tuft A is thereby formed having legs B of substantially equal length. At the high feeding speed the yarn tension is sufficiently reduced for finger 30 to move downwardly into engagement with edge 31. A tuft C is thereby formed having a short leg D and a long leg E.
