Pile fabric comprising successive transverse rows of cut and uncut loops arranged according to a pattern is made by feeding increments of the pile yarns towards the loop-inserting position in accordance with the pattern, feeding the work lengthwise after the insertion of a row of loops, and then cutting those loops which exceed a selected length. To produce the fabric, the machine described in Specification 825,581 is modified to cut all the loops of maximum length. Yarns P<1> are fed to needles 24 by interleaved elements 34, 39 mounted on endless chains 33 38, the height of the elements being varied in accordance with the desired pattern. Loopers 27 co-operate with the needles to form loops L<1> of maximum length. A bar 44, attached to the needle bar 19, deflects the yarns upwardly between the yarn-feed elements and the needles when the latter rise, whereby yarn is withdrawn from those needles to which an increment of yarn less than that required for the formation of a loop of maximum length has previously been fed. When the work is next fed, the loops of maximum length encircle respective fixed cutting-blades 41 and are cut thereon, when the yarn is next stationary, by movable blades 42. The loops L of less than maximum length pass uncut over the blades 41. Thin fixed plates 43 are arranged with their free edges lying close to the need les and above the loopers so as to engage the loops when these are released by the loopers, to prevent, the loops from twisting out of a plane transverse to the direction of work feed.
