Abstract

635,817. Sewing machines ; embroidery. GREENWOOD, F. April 22, 1948; No. 11056. [Class 112] Tufting-machines.-Fabric 2 is fed between guide members beneath reciprocating yarn-inserting members 21 adapted to pass through the backing where the yarn is engaged by trapping means 23 to form loops, each of which is subsequently engaged by a prodder or guide 27 with which co-operates cutting means for severing the loops. In the embodiment shown, the yarn 2 is fed between side guides 4 and vertically adjustable plates 5, the lower plate having teeth 7 in the rear edge, by a ratchet-driven roller 30, which may be roughened or spiked and from which the finished fabric passes to a receiving roller. A transverse row of tubular eyed needles 21, aligned with the spaces between the teeth 7, is carried by a vertically reciprocating bar 9. with adjustable stroke, and a corresponding row of oscillating loop-taking members 23 is placed beneath the fabric. A row of prodders 27, carried by a bar 26, moves to and fro to take the loops from the members 23, and may also be oscillated slightly. A separately-driven endless band knife 37 cuts the loops as they are fed along the prodders with the fabric ; the band knife may be replaced by a set of rotary cutters; on a transverse shaft, working in grooves. in the undersides of the prodders. If uncut pile is required, the cutting mechanism is stopped and the prodders withdrawn. The yarn to the needle passes round a shaft, which may be covered with friction material, arranged parallel to the needle-bar 9 and mounted in bearings sliding on the same vertical guides 8 as the needle-bar, the bar and shaft being connected by a band 14 incorporating a spring, and being kept apart by distance rods (not shown); the downward movement of the tension shaft is limited by collars on the guides 8 so that the shaft moves with the bar in the upper part of the movement of the latter but remains stationary during the lower part, thus increasing the yarn tension. The yarn preferably passes over a detector device to stop the machine in case of yarn breakage or failure. Tufting.-Single-ply yarn is preferably used each needle may carry more than one yarn. The underside of the finished material may be sprayed with an aqueous dispersion of rubber or other bonding material.
