Abstract

825,581. Tufting machines. MOHASCO INDUSTRIES Inc. May 3, 1957, No. 14187/57. Class 112 A method of producing a pile fabric in which the height of the tufts is varied according to a pattern comprises advancing a backing sheet, feeding a length of yarn controlled in accordance with the pattern, taking up a fixed length of the yarn so fed into a storage zone, withdrawing a fixed length from the zone and inserting it into the backing sheet to form a loop and repeating this cycle indefinitely to form the fabric, the taking up of the fixed length of yarn into the zone in a cycle in which the controlled length of yarn is shorter than that required to form a tuft of maximum length causing the yarn to be drawn from the loop inserted through the backing sheet in that cycle. A multineedle tufting machine for prosecuting the method comprises a storage zone defined by yarn guides 24, 25 into which the yarn Y is taken up and withdrawn, as the needle rises and falls respectively, by a deflecting bar 69 attached to the needle bar 18, and yarn feeding means comprising two interleaving series of pattern elements 31, 43 carried on endless chains 32, 44 respectively. A sheet of yarns, one yarn for each needle, passes between the interleaving pattern elements the height of which are varied according to the desired pattern so that each feed increment, the wavelike length of yarn between two adjoining elements 43, has a length corresponding to the pattern. The chains are driven in synchronism with the needle so that a leading feed increment of each yarn is released for each needle cycle and simultaneously a further increment is drawn into the feeding means from the supply creels. As the needle descends a fixed length of yarn is also released from 'the storage zone 24, 25, the sum of these released lengths being available to the needle to form a tuft in the backing sheet 12; as the needle rises the fixed length is taken back into the storage zone leaving a tuft of a height corresponding to the controlled length of yarn fed. Each pattern element may vary in height along its length so that the line of tufts produced by a descent and rise of the needle bar may vary in height along the row. Specifications 825,582 and 825,583 are referred to.
