Abstract
1,098,568. Tufting machines, tufted fabrics. SINGER CO. Dec. 12, 1966 [Dec. 23, 1965], No. 55469/66. Headings D1G and D1K. A tufted fabric is produced by projecting a loop of a first yarn through backing fabric from a first to a second side thereof, projecting a loop of a second yarn through the backing fabric from the first to the second side at a point closely adjacent the point of penetration of the first yarn, the second loop passing through the first loop, collapsing the first loop on to the second loop, maintaining the second loop, advancing the backing fabric to form back stitches of the first and second yarns, the first yarn back stitch preferably forming a loop, and repeating the foregoing sequence. The tufted fabric comprises parallel rows of stitched seams so formed. Backing fabric F is fed to an upwardlyinclined needle plate 70 by a pair of spaced driven let-off rolls (74), and after passing over a bar (85) descends to a pair of spaced feed rolls (86) driven from the rolls (74) at a slightly higher speed. A first inclined needle 39, carrying a first yarn 72, passes to one side of a yarn-supporting finger 95 before penetrating fabric F, and on commencing to rise throws a first loop L2. An oppositely-inclined second needle 25, carrying a second yarn Y1, then passes through fabric F and through the loop L2, thereby retaining the latter when needle 39 ascends. Needle 25 on commencing to rise throws a second loop L1 which is retained by an oscillating looper (100). When needle 25 has withdrawn from fabric F, a take-up acts on yarn Y2 to tighten loop L2 about loop L1. Fabric F is then fed to form back stitches B1 and B2 in yarns Yl and Y2 respectively. Finger 95 is also shifted laterally, whereby needle 39 in its next descent passes on the other side of finger 95 to lay the back stitch B2 thereover. Finger 95 is formed on its upper surface with a hump which serves to expand the looped back stitch B2 when the latter passes off finger 95, thereby further tightening loop L2.
