Abstract
1,188,551. Tufting machines, tufted fabrics. D.C. ONE, Ltd. 5 Jan., 1968 [12 Jan., 1967], No. 1653/67. Headings DIG and D1K. A method of patterning cut pile fabric comprises feeding the fabric longitudinally, repeatedly forming in the fabric, at each of a plurality of stations longitudinally spaced apart a laterally-extending row of laterallyspaced cut pile loops, and, at the approach regions to said stations, positively effecting lateral reciprocation of the fabric with substantially the same amplitude of lateral movement at each approach region, whereby a plurality of series of wavy lines of out pile loops are formed in the fabric, the amplitude of lateral movement being greater than the lateral spacing between the cut pile loops so that the wavy lines cross over one another. As shown, a needle bar 2, carrying needles 3, is connected by bars 21 to a needle bar 20 carrying needles 19. The needles 3, 19 have a pitch of 1 inch and are staggered. The needle bars 2, 20 are spaced 5 inches apart. Loopers 10 co-operate with needles 3 to form loops which are cut by knives 12. Loopers 25 cooperate with needles 19 to form loops which are cut by knives 26. Spiked feed rollers 9, 24, arranged respectively ahead of the needles 3 and 19, are reciprocated axially to shift the fabric transversely to the direction of feed through an amplitude of about 5 inches. The arrangement produces two series of wavy parallel lines D, E of tufting which cross one another at C. To accentuate the pattern, every third needle may be omitted. Loopers 10 are carried by a bar 27 and loopers 25 are carried by a bar 30 which is connected by bars 29 to bar 27. The latter is rigid with crank arms 28 on a rocking shaft 11. Knives 12 are carried by a bar 31 rigid with a rocking shaft 13. Knives 26 are carried by a bar 36 rigid with a shaft 35 having a crank arm 34 connected by a link 33 to a crank arm 32 rigid with bar 31. Shafts 11, 13 are interconnected by a linkage, and shaft 13 is oscillated via a linkage from the main shaft. In a modification, shaft 13 is eliminated and link 33 is connected by a linkage to shaft 11 which is oscillated via a linkage from the main shaft. In a further modification the respective needle bars with the associated loopers and knives are operated independently of one another. Alternatively, the two rows of needles may be carried by a single needle bar.
