A tufting machine comprises a first reciprocating needle for penetrating backing fabric to project a loop of yarn therethrough, a second reciprocating needle for entering the loop of yarn presented by the first needle and projecting a loop of yarn therethrough, and looper means for entering the loop of yarn projected by the second needle and for holding the same while the second needle retracts. As shown, backing fabric F passes between a worksupporting plate 51 and an upper plate 52 carrying a series of fingers 53. A reciprocating needle bar 27, located above plate 51, carries a series of needles 28 the axes of which are substantially normal to plate 51. A reciprocating needle bar 21, located below plate 51, carries a series of needles 22 the axes of which are parallel to plate 51. In operation, a needle 28 carrying yarn Y2 passes on one side of a finger 53 to penetrate the backing fabric. As needle 28 begins to ascend, a needle 22 is advanced to pass between needle 28 and the loop of yarn Y2 thereon, whereby continued ascent of needle 28 leaves said loop on needle 22. When the latter commences its return stroke, a looper 37 enters the loop L1 of yarn Yl thereon to hold loop L1 as needle 22 retracts. After needle 22 has withdrawn from the loop of yarn Y2, a take-up operates on yarn Y2 to tighten said loop about the loop L1. Before needle 28 next descends, the backing fabric is fed and plate 52 is shifted laterally, whereby needle 28 passes on the other side of finger 53 to form an upper loop L2 of yarn Y2 thereover. Finger 53 is formed with a hump 71 adapted to expand the loop L2 as the latter passes off the finger 53, thereby further tightening the loop of yarn Y2 under the fabric upon the loop L1.
