Abstract

1507201 Tufting machine CARD & CO INC 27 May 1975 [16 Oct 1974] 23177/75 Heading DIG A tufting machine forming spaced rows of loop (72) and cut pile (71) stitching in base fabric 18 being fed in direction 29 through the machine, comprises first and second needles 11, 12, loop pile hooks 23 with bills 28 extending in the direction 29 and each cooperating with a first needle 11, cut pile hooks 34 with bills 35 extending in the other direction and co-operating with the second needle 17 a knife mechanism 62 for cutting loops on hook 34 the hooks being driven to move towards each other as the needles descend and away from each other as the needles rise. The hooks are driven from an oscillating looper shaft 55; a first arm 52 therein being connected by. link 51 adjustably connected to a slot 49 in an arm 48 of a lever 43 pivoted at 46 and adjustably supporting at 38, 39, on its other arm 42, the loop pile hook bar 37 while a second looper shaft arm 36 is connected by link 58 to a rocker arm 60 carrying the cut loop hook bar 33. The needles are set obliquely to the feed direction (Fig. 4 not shown) and exert a camming action on the hook bills as they pass by the needles. The needle bar 10 may comprise two transverse bars (81, 82 Figs. 5, 6 not shown) coupled by slotted bars (83) so that the distance between the bars may be adjusted.
