Abstract

1324193 Tufting machine; tufted fabric B & J MACHINERY CO Inc 6 Nov 1970 [17 Nov 1969] 53013/70 Headings DIG and D1K A tufting machine, forming narrow gauge pile fabric, having means 21 feeding the backing material M, first and second rows 40, 40<SP>1</SP> of spaced needles 47 for inserting tufts of yarn Y in cooperation with loopers 61, 61<SP>1</SP> respectively, is provided with means between the first and second rows of needles guiding the backing material so that rows of tufts formed by the first row pass through the spaces between needles of the second row (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown). In the embodiment described the guiding is provided by rollers 101, 102 grooved at 101a and 102a respectively, a stripper member 112 having grooves 113 and support means 103 comprising a bar 104 having thin plates 105 thereon to define grooves 106 therebetween. The bar 104 is secured to shafts 107 carried in a bar 116 and is reciprocated towards and away from the second row 40<SP>1</SP> of needles in time with the looper motion. The bar 116 may be oscillated together with part 101, 102 and 112, transversely of the material feed to provide a zig zag stitch. The needle bars are reciprocated by eccentrics 31 on a main shaft 22 through linkage 33, 41, 42, 45. Similar cams (71, Fig. 4, not shown) adjustably mounted on shaft 22, oscillate the shaft 65 and the shaft 65<SP>1</SP> connected thereto by a link (82). Shafts 65, 65<SP>1</SP> are connected to shafts 63, 63<SP>1</SP> carrying the loopers 61, 61<SP>1</SP>, and to the shafts 64, 64<SP>1</SP> carrying the loop cutters 62, 62<SP>1</SP>. Shaft 65 also provides the reciprocation of support 103 and bar 104 already referred to. The cutters 62 may be rendered inoperative and the loopers reversed when uncut pile is required. The end portions of the housing 12 contain oil (86, Figs. 1 and 4 not shown) which is circulated to the bearings and eccentrics by pumps (87) driven from the shaft 22 by pulley and belt assemblies (88).
