Abstract
849,174. Tufting machines. CARD, J. L. Oct. 9, 1958 [Nov. 25, 1957], No. 32269/58. Class 112 A tufting machine is adapted to form both loop pile and cut pile, according to a predetermined pattern, in the line of tufts produced by a single needle. Cut pile 23 is formed in a conventional manner by a needle 10, loop-taking hook 16 and loop-cutting knife 19. The machine is modified: by the provision of loop-stripping means adapted to prevent selected ones of the loops formed on the hook 16 from being engaged by the knife 19. A work-support plate 30 is formed with parallel grooves 31 each containing a bar 32, one of the latter for each needle, and all said bars being supported on a pivot bar 33. The front end of each bar 32 is formed with an offset tip 34 which is situated directly beneath the bill 22 of its associated hook 16. A projection 36 at the rear end of bar 32 is biased by a spring 37 towards a rotary drum 38 carrying a pattern sheet 40 formed with spaced slots 41. When projection 36 engages the surface of sheet 40, tip 34 is spaced from bill 22 and loops formed on the latter move progressively towards the throat 35 to be cut thereat by knife 19. When projection 36 enters a slot 41, tip 34 engages bill 22 and during the rearwards movement of bill 22 serves to strip the loop therefrom and thereby prevent cutting of the loop, to form loop pile 24. It is stated that the arrangement may be combined with the yarn feed arrangement described in Specifications 735.019 and 780,370 in order to produce high and low uncut loops.
