Abstract

1,142,729. Sewing machines. UNION SPECIAL MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H. 23 Aug., 1966 [25 Aug., 1965; 15 July, 1966], No. 37654/66. Heading DIG. A lock stitch sewing machine is provided with thread-severing means comprising a blade which is arranged to move between the throat plate and a rotary hook over the bobbin case-retaining finger and into the path of the needle when the thread loop has been drawn out to its greatest extent, the blade remaining in this position until the cast loop has been drawn therearound, and then being moved backwards towards a fixed knife blade. As shown, a fixed bar 3 carries a finger 4 restraining the rotation of the bobbin case in a rotary hook 7. A knife blade 19, fixed to bar 3, overlies a raised surface 22 of finger 4. An arm 11, pivoted to bar 3, is biased by spring means normally to position a threadseizing blade 9, carried thereby during the final rotation of the sewing machine, under blade 19. When the rotary hook draws the seized needle thread loop to its fullest extent, arm 11 is swung by an energised solenoid to carry blade 9 over finger 4 and into the path of needle 6, whereby, when the loop is cast, the side 25 of the loop extending from the work and the bobbin thread 26 are drawn about the side of blade 9 facing blade 19, while the side 27 of the loop extending from the needle is drawn about the opposite side of blade 9. The solenoid is then de-energised, whereby blade 9 returns to its initial position and sides 25, 26 are severed, the cut ends being held between blades 9, 19. The energisation and de-energisation of the solenoid are controlled by contacts on conventional needles positioning means. In a modification, surface 22 is grooved to receive the threads drawn thereover, and arm 11 is provided with a resilient thread-controlling finger.
