Abstract
852,616. Sewing machines, sewing. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. Feb. 5, 1959 [Feb. 7, 1958], No. 4042/59. Class 112 Multi-needle machines, stitch-forming devices, stitched seams. A sewing machine comprises a pair of reciprocating needles disposed one behind the other in the direction of work feed, work feeding means adapted to advance the work by increments each equal to twice the distance between the needles, a threaded looper mounted to swing in the feed direction for co-operation with both needles, and spreader mechanism for co-operating with the looper. The multi-needle machine described in Specification 709,545 and adapted to produce parallel lines of double-loop stitching of the Federal 401 type, is modified by replacing one or more of the needles with a pair or pairs of needles spaced in the direction of work feed, and by adjusting the feed stroke to twice said spacing. The needles 23a, 23b carry threads 67, 68 respectively, and the looper 41a carries a thread 69. In Fig. 10 the looper, bearing a pair of needle thread loops seized on the previous descent of the needles, is moving rearwardly, and the loop of thread 69 extending from the looper to the work is held open by the laterally moving spreader 56a for the descent therethrough of the needles. In Fig. 17 the looper has shed the previously seized loops and the needles are about to ascend, the looptaker having moved to the inoperative position. In Fig. 18 the looper has moved forwardly into the loops formed by the, ascending needles, and the previously formed stitches are being set. The machine produces a modified form of Federal Type 402 stitch, as shown in Fig. 16, the stitch length being equal to half the feed stroke. The machine can produce one or more seams of said stitches. In addition, one or more seams can be produced with only one needle to form Type 401 stitches of stitch length equal to the feed stroke. The machine may be provided with an auxiliary roller feed as described in Specification 709,545, or with a needle feed as described in Specification 687,812. In a preferred form of looper arrangement, as shown in Figs. 23 and 25, the looper 100 has a vertical stem 101 received in an aperture formed in a holder 99 and locked in adjusted position therein by a set screw 102. A needle guard 103 is mounted on top of the holder, has a hole through which the stem 101 passes, and is locked in adjusted angular position by a set screw 104. The holder is formed integrally with a needle deflector 105.
