A chain stitch sewing machine adapted to cover the edge of a fabric with binding, the stitching at one side of which is blind, is provided with a needle having a point which is offset from the axis of the needle, and a groove receiving the thread extending from the last-formed stitch, the longitudinal plane of said groove being inclined to the line of stitching, and also to the diametrical plane containing the needle point. The edge 16a of fabric 16 is covered with binding tape 12 folded to U-shape, with inturned edges, in a guide 11, and so applied to the fabric 16 that stitching performed by a threaded needle 3 and a threaded looper (8) does not penetrate the upper layer of tape 12. The needle has a locating flat 19 parallel to the line Y-Y of stitching, and a point 22 offset from the needle axis 24 in a direction away from edge 16a, the diametrical plane P-P containing point 22 being inclined at 45 degrees to the line Y-Y of stitching. Thread from the supply passes to the needle eye 23 via a long groove 26, the longitudinal plane of which is co-incident with the line Y-Y of stitching. A looper-passing groove 27 is provided adjacent eye 23, and a shoot groove 28, extending from groove 27 for receiving the thread from the last-formed stitch, has a longitudinal plane which is substantially perpendicular to plane P-P. The presser foot has a sole plate 29 secured by screws 31 to one arm of an angle bracket, to the other arm of which an extension plate 9 of the folding guide 11 is secured by screws 10. Sole plate 29 is also formed with a workreceiving toe 29a, and with a lug 32 slidable, in the direction of stitching, in a block 35a provided on a bracket 35 fixed by a screw 42 to the presser bar 5. A screw, threaded into block 35a, has a head 39 engaged in a grooved formed in lug 32, whereby rotation of head 39 serves to shift lug 32, plate 29 and folding guide 11 in the direction of stitching. Lug 32 is fixed in adjusted position by a screw 37.
