Abstract
623,314. Furnace roofs. UNITED STEEL COS., Ltd., and PLUCK, J. E. April 29, 1947, No. 11435. [Class 51 (ii)] Basic refractory arched roofs for tilting furnaces are supported. at the front and back by buttresses 5 mounted on pivoted levers 6 interconnected by levers 7, tie rods 8 linked to steel joists 11 contacting the roof and bell crank levers 9 from the longer arms of which are suspended weights 10 adjusted to balance the roof thrust, said longer arm being so inclined that tilting movement of the furnace will move said arm towards the horizontal thus increasing the leverage of the weights to balance the increased load in the roof. The balance weights 10 are suspended from a pin passing through a' slot in the lever arm 9 and also through a cam slot in a plate 12 mounted on a fixed part of the furnace so that movement of the roof in use induces compensating movements of the point of application of the weights. Specification 572,124 is referred to, and according to the Provisional Specification the pivot points of the levers 6 may be vertically adjustable as in that prior Specification.
