In a suspended furnace roof employing basic or neutral bricks contained in a steel shell, one skewback is resiliently supported to allow for expansion due to heating and the degree of lateral pressure on the skewback is made adjustable to allow for additional expansion due to the growth of the bricks on oxidation of the steel shells. The skewback 27 seats in a channel frame 29 pivotally supported as at 30 to the free ends of hangers 31 suspended from I-beams 21 carrying the arch 20, and is yieldably held in place by a device 32 comprising a framework 33 attached to the rear wall of the furnace and carrying fixed plate 36 engaging a threaded rod 39 attached to the frame 29 by a member 40, an adjustable plate 46, and a compression spring 55 held between said plate 46 and a spring seat plate 56 engaging the fixed plate 36. The threaded rod 39 is formed at one end with a hinge pin 45 received by grooves formed in the clamped blocks 41 and 42 comprising the member 40, and is formed at the other end with a square or hexagonal head portion 47 adapted to receive an adjustment key whereby the pressure of the spring may be varied. Relative movement between the plate 36 and the spring seat plate 56 is prevented by ribs 57 on the former coacting with ribs 58 and 59 on the latter. The bricks 61 forming the arch 20 are suspended from arched supporting members 23 by hangers 24, each of the members 23 being itself carried by hangers 22 slung from the I-beams 21 and each being associated with a holding member 60 in the form of an I-beam preventing upward movement of individual bricks.
