Tuyeres. -The effective area of a cupola-furnace tuyere C is adjustable, both on the outlet or furnace side A and the inlet or windbelt side B, by means of a plate D mounted on a pivoted arm d and carrying a vertical damper F which partly closes the inlet side B of the tuyere when the plate D is moved to decrease the area of the outlet side A. The arm d is pivoted at d' and carries a toothed quadrant operated by a hand-wheel to adjust the position of the plates D, F. The side walls of the tuyere C are splayed outwardly towards the furnace side A, and the plate D is slotted, as shown in Fig. 2, to clear the vertical bracing members b. A modification is described in which the plate D is so mounted that it may be moved up and down while still maintained in a horizontal posltion within the tuyere.
