Abstract
696,414. Open-hearth furnaces. SALEM ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and JONES, H. Oct. 16, 1950 [July 15, 1949], No. 18658/49. Class 51(ii) In a reversible open-hearth furnace having at each end thereof, a slag pocket which extends vertically below the furnace hearth and opens to the interior of the furnace beyond the adjacent bridge plate of the furnace, each end wall of the furnace at the throat of the slag pocket and between positions located respectively above and below the bridge plate is inclined upwardly and inwardly towards the hearth, and burners are accommodated in the said inclined wall portions above the level of the bridge plates in such a manner that they do not project into and obstruct the flow of gases through the throats to any material extent. In the reversible open hearth furnace shown adjacent each bridge plate 2 is a slag pocket 3 the upper end of which communicates with the hearth 1 through a throat 4 whilst the lower end is connected to a regenerator via an opening 5. The end wall 6 of each slag pocket has an end portion 7 which is inclined towards the throat 4 at an angle of 45 degrees. The burners (not shown), which do not project from the wall surface, are built into each inclined wall 7 in the vicinity of the roof structure 9 and are arranged in such a position that their longitudinal centre lines 11 pass over the adjacent bridge plate 2 and intersect the workreceiving surface of the hearth midway between the two bridge plates. The angle of inclination of wall 7 may very between 45 degrees and 60 degrees also the wall 7 may be constructed as part of the roof structure 9. Alternatively the lower end of wall 7 may be a part of end wall 6 and its upper end may be part of the roof 9. In the latter case the roof structure end may be inclined at a greater angle than the other and lower end and may extend from the roof to the region of the burners.
