Abstract

769,513. Open hearth furnaces. INLAND STEEL CO. April 4, 1952 [July 6, 1951], No. 19517/55. Divided out of 767,933. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). In an open hearth furnace having a burner and a single vertical air uptake at each end, air from the regenerators passes via a horizontal fantail passage 29 and a slag pocket 30 into the uptake 25 formed with a narrowed venturi section, said uptake 25 being defined by an end wall 17, a chill-box section 21 and wing walls 31 and 32. The wing walls are formed with lower curved sections 33 and 34 forming the venturi-section with the longitudinally and upwardly sloping chill-box wall 49, and with outwardly flaring wall sections 35 and 36 leading to upper vertical sections 37, 38 spaced apart by the full width of the furnace between the buckstays 18, 19. Burner ports at each end of the furnace are shown at 26, Fig. 2. The ratio of the length of the fantail passage 29 to that of the slag pocket 30 is at least 1 to 2.34. With this construction, the air supply is centrally and uniformly delivered, enabling higher fuel consumptions to be efficiently obtained, and the chill-box section 21 being closer to the back wall, the capacity of the hearth 12 can also be increased for a given furnace.
