Abstract
1,197,120. Cupola furnaces. PENZENSKY KOMPRESSORNY ZAVOD. 3 Dec., 1968, No. 57332/68. Heading F4B. A gas fired cupola furnace 1 is divided by upper and lower projecting shoulders 2, 3 respectively into a metal melting chamber 4 and a molten metal heating chamber 5. The metal from the upper chamber 4 runs down sloping surface 11 to drop into a well 19 at the bottom of chamber 5 prior to discharge through taphole 22. Hot air from main 15 is supplied above well 19 through nozzles 14 and passages 13, together with hydrocarbon fuel gases from pipes 16, which pipes 16 pass through hot air main 15, to promote partial decomposition of the gaseous hydrocarbons prior to their introduction into chamber 5. Further hydrocarbon fuel gases are supplied through nozzles 18. A luminous gaseous mass is therefore formed above well 19 through which the metal droplets from surface 11 must fall as they splash into the well 19. The exhaust gases from chamber 5 pass up through shift 1 to melt the metal charge in chamber 4.
