Abstract

Reverberatory furnaces; charges, agitating.-In a furnace of the kind comprising a melting-chamber 1 and a collecting chamber or hearth 2 in which the molten metal can be subjected to further treatment, burners 11 are directed at an angle on to tha surface of the metal in the collecting chamber, and the pool is made of small depth near the burners, so that the metal will be effectively stirred by the blast of heating- gases, and of greater depth at the opposite end towards which the slag is driven. The melting- chamber may be heated by a fire-place 6 or by liquid fuel burners, and the heating-gases therefrom pass through the collecting-chamber on their way to the stack 9. The roof of the collecting- chamber slopes downwards away from the burners 11, and it is stated that a portion of the heating-gases doubles back underneath the roof. returns to the burner end, and then passes again over the metal. At the end of the collecting- chamber remote from the burners are tap-holes 12, 13 for slag and metal, and an inspection and working opening 15, and in a side wall is an opening 16, through which additions may be made to the metal. The charge is fed on to the hearth of the melting-chamber in blocks, and the space between these is filled with smaller pieces of metal fed through roof openings 18. These openings may be staggered, or the metal may be allowed to pile up beneath them. In a modification a single collecting-chamber is associated with two melting-chambers, one heated by burners and the other by a fire-place.
