Abstract

113,834. Beckett, J. H. March 8, 1917. Cast-iron processes.-A body of molten iron in a mixer or the like a is refined by means of a blast of hot or cold air under a pressure of 20 to 80 lb. per square inch supplied in an oblique direction beneath the surface of the metal through movable inclined tuyeres c so that the metal is agitated and circulated. The tuyeres c are introduced through openings d having vertically moving doors e, and may each be surrounded by a baffle h, Fig. 3, having internal projections h<1>. The refined metal may be further treated in an open-hearth furnace.
