Abstract

162,624. Hibbard, H. D. April 29, 1921. Tilting-furnaces. - A metallurgical furnace, especially for puddling, which is mounted to rock on hollow trunnions 6, 7, is formed with pockets 19, 20 substantially at right-angles to one another, with an intervening dam 18 over which the contents are poured when the furnace is tilted. On completion of the reaction, the furnace is reversed in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 4 until the wall 24 becomes the bottom, whereupon the slag is discharged through an opening 30, and the treated metal through the doors 26. The furnace may be fired by oil burners 39, 40 axial with the trunnions, air being supplied from reversible regenerators 34, 35.
