Abstract

Open-hearth furnaces.-In a reversible furnace heated by liquid fuel, air from one or other of the regenerators 13 passes into the furnace through the corresponding vertical air-port 18 and strikes against the furnace roof, which it tends to cool and at the same time becomes further heated before impinging on the bath of molten metal. Inclined oil-burners 20, inserted through apertures 19 in the end walls of the furnace and arranged across the path of the air, direct the fuel to the centre of the furnace where it meets the air. The working-chamber is preferably made high and narrow with contracted ends having the ports 18 extending to the full width.
