433,669. Rotary and tilting furnaces. MOND, A. L., 19, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(Metallges. Akt.- Ges.; 45, Bockenheimer Anlage, Frankforton-Main, Germany) Oct. 8, 1934, No. 28792. [Class 51 (ii)] A rotary or rocking furnace 1, particularly for refining copper, is mounted on rollers 12 secured to a turntable 14 so that it can be rotated through at least 180‹ about a vertical axis to enable it to be charged and/or fired at both ends. The heating gases are supplied from a chamber 3 having burners 4 and mounted on a rail so that it can be moved to other positions when the swinging of the furnace renders this necessary ; the waste gas flue 10 is formed with a plurality of dampercontrolled inlets which, as shown in Fig. 2, correspond to the positions BB<1>, CC<1>. and DD<1> of the furnace. Auxiliary heating means 20 may be provided at B to enable heating to be carried on when charging or pouring at this position. In one method of operation described, one half of the furnace is charged at A or B and it is then swung through 180‹ to enable the other half to be charged, whereupon it is returned to position CC<1> for the melting to proceed. During the firing the furnace may be reversed to ensure complete melting of that part of the charge adjacent the end C<1>. When the melting is complete, slag is run off by operating a tilting device 15 on which the turntable 14 is mounted, and, on return to position CC<1>, the furnace is rotated about its longitudinal axis until the tuyÞres 7 are below the surface of the bath. Compressed air is then supplied to the tuyÞres 7 to effect oxidation on completion of which the furnace is moved to position BB<1> or DD<1> for poling to be performed. Finally, the furnace is returned to position CC<1> and tilted to discharge the molten metal through tap-hole 17 to the casting machine 16. The tap-hole may be provided at 17<1> in which case discharge is effected in position AA<1> or BB<1>.
