Abstract
771,858. Rotary tilting furnaces. METALLGES. AKT.-GES. July 20, 1955 fAug. 17, 1954], No. 21054/55. Class 51 (2). A rotary, tiltable reverberatory furnace in which metal may be melted comprises a shell 1 lined with refractory 2, which is rotatable freely about the longitudinal axis b and also about the horizontal axis a at right angles to it, the single opening shown being utilized for all the furnace operations, e.g. for charging and discharging, for repairs, and as an inlet for the burner flame and an outlet for waste gases. The shell has a supporting ring 11 resting on trunnions in fixed bearings to give a universal suspension, the drive for the rotary movements being mounted on one of the bearing supports. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the furnace is cylindrical with one part-spherical closed end, and it may also be spherical, an ellipsoid, or a truncated cone with semi-elliptical ends. In operation, the furnace is charged by a skip 3, rotated in a clockwise direction through 90 degrees so that the opening engages a burner 5 and a flue 6, and when the melting is complete is swung upwardly through 180 degrees so that slag may be skimmed off into a ladle 7. Further tilting discharges the molten metal into a ladle 9, and complete inversion of the furnace tips loose bricks &c. into a ladle 10 so that repairs may be effected to the lining if necessary. For low temperature work a heavier edge may be carried, the burner 5 and flue 6 being moved into a position .in which the furnace opening is between the vertical and horizontal positions, Fig. 6 (not shown).
