Abstract
572,124. Roofs. UNITED STEEL COS., Ltd., and PLUCK, J. E. March 23, 1944, No. 5426. [Class 51 (ii)] Arched roofs for industrial furnaces are supported at the front and back by buttresses 11 mounted on levers 16 pivoted at 13 to the wall stays 5, 6. The upper ends of the front and back levers 16 are interconnected through levers 27 and tie rods 31 and bell-crank levers. 19 at the back have their shorter arms pivoted to the connection between the tie rods and levers 16 while their longer arms carry weights 22. The pivots upon which the levers 16, 27 and 19 are supported are mounted in bearings which may slide on the wall stays 5 and 6 and be vertically adjusted by rods 20, 26, the upper ends of the rods 20 being supported on the tie beams 7 and provided with adjusting nuts 24. Longitudinal bars 41 make contact with the roof and follow its movements during expansion and contraction by connection through links 45, levers 47, 48, 49 pivoted in brackets supported on the beams 7 and connected by links to the tie rods 31.
