Abstract
940,751. Suspended shoots. VEREINGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN - UND STAHLWERKE A.G. Aug. 10, 1961 [Oct. 3, 1960], No. 28927/61. Heading B8S. During the refining of molten iron in a tilting furnace, additions of cold slag and lime necessary to stiffen the slag near the furnace mouth are delivered by apparatus comprising a shoot 4 suspended by a rope hoist 13 from an arm 12 swinging in a horizontal plane about a vertical axis 15 offset from the furnace horizontal axis. The shoot 4 comprises a frusto-conical mouth 7 and cranked portions 5 and 6, a discharge valve 8 controlled by a pivoted lever 9, and a handle 11 by which it can be manoeuvred in the furnace mouth. On being raised to a hopper 18 delivering a measured quantity of material, the shoot swings through an arc of rather more than 90 degrees, the offset position of the arm axis 15 giving a slight initial movement away from the furnace mouth.
