Abstract

622,224. Liquid fuel bnrners. DARLING. R. F., and PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. May 7, 1946, No. 13773. [Class 75(i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A stop valve for controlling the flow of oil fuel through a sprayer in the combustion chamber of a gas turbine, wherein the orifice opens into a swirl chamber in permanent communication with supply and spill pipes is characterised in that when the orifice is closed fuel is permitted to flow through the swirl chamber. As shown, a combined lift and piston valve 4, Fig. 1, is disposed in the end of the sprayer casing 2 which is provided with a cap member, having a jet delivery orifice 28, and a swirl chamber 30 communicating with a supply pipe 32 through tangential ducts 31 and with a spill pipe 36 through passages 39, 40 in the valve 4 when the orifice is open, and through a passage formed between a bush 41 and flats 38 on the valve when the orifice is closed. The valve 4 is connected to a spindle 6 to which 'is secured a cam-follower 9, Fig. 12, which engages with a cam 8, Fig. 9, secured to the casing. To close the orifice a handwheel 16 is rotated clockwise to disengage the follower from grooves in the cam whence a spring 43 urges the cam surfaces into engagement with each other and the valve 4 towards closure. To ensure that the temperature of the circulating fuel is substantially unaffected by that of the surrounding hot atmosphere the pipes 32, 36 are disposed in an air chamber in the casing with only their ends in contact with the casing. In a modification, instead of being cam-actuated, the valve may be controlled by a solenoid or other device which operates, e.g. on excessive temperature of the exhaust gases from the turbine or overspeeding of the operated machinery.
