Abstract

631,750. Spray burners. MORLEY, C. G. Feb. 24, 1947, No. 5372. [Class 75(i) [Also in Group XXIX] A variable orifice fuel-injection device comprises a fuel control valve of the type in which the effective sizes of flow orifices are varied by relative adjustment of a plunger and a cylinder, one of these adjustable elements being provided with a spherically curved surface to abut a complementary surface on a seating part which is capable of displacement in a plane at right angles to the axis of the adjustable elements. A cylinder 16 in which a plunger 15 slides to vary the flow of oil through tangential slots 17 in the cylinder wall is provided with a head 18 having a part spherical surface 19 which is lapped to a complementary surface on a ring 20 seated on an annular flat surface 22 on the end of a fuel chamber 11. The head 18 of the cylinder is pressed against the seating ring 20 by a spring 24 or alternatively by the pressure of the fuel. Displacement of the axis of the cylinder relative to the axis of the fuel chamber 11 is accommodated by sliding between the part spherical surfaces and by transverse movement of the seating ring 20. The plunger 15 which is a lapped fit within the cylinder is threaded into a nut 14 closing the fuel chamber and is provided with a squared portion 25 and a collar 26 for adjustment purposes and with a locking nut 27. Fuel passes out of the cylinder through an outlet in its spherical wall to a port 21 in the seating ring leading to a fuel outlet 13 in the fuel chamber. The valve may be used in a gas turbine fuel system as a main throttle valve or as a subsidiary valve arranged in parallel with the main throttle valve to control the flow of fuel to the engine when idling. When used in variable orifice injection means, the tangential ports 17 constitute the variable orifice and the port 21 in the seating ring constitutes an atomizing orifice and the plunger is subjected to the inlet pressure of the fuel.
