Abstract

1380046 Recirculating I C engine exhaust gas BRITISH LEYLAND (AUSTIN-MORRIS) Ltd 22 March 1972 [6 Jan 1971] 566/71 Heading F1B [Also in Divisions F2 and G3] The flow of exhaust gas through a metering orifice 9 to the intake manifold 5 is controlled by a valve 10 which operates to maintain substantially atmospheric pressure immediately downstream of the orifice so that the orifice meters the recirculation of exhaust gas as a substantially constant percentage of the mass exhaust flow and therefore the mass air flow into the engine 1, e.g. 12 to 17%. The valve member 21 of the valve 10 is operated by a diaphragm 17 subject in the chamber 14 to the intake manifold suction, through the valve stem 23 and orifices 27, 28, and in the chamber 15 to atmospheric pressure, through a duct 19 and air filter 20 and intake manifold suction through a stem orifice 25. The orifice 25 is controlled by a valve member 26 on a diaphragm 18 subjected in a chamber 16, to the pressure at an orifice 33 immediately downstream of the orifice 9 or the substantially constant suction in the carburetter region 7, between the choke and throttle valves, under the control of a valve 11. The valve member 46 of the valve 11 engages the seat 45 when the bi-metallic element 48 is cold and/or the diaphragm 37 is not subjected to sufficient pressure difference in the chambers 35 and 36, connected to the region 7 and the carburetter port 40, to overcome the bias of a spring 38. When the diaphragm 18 is subject to a pressure below atmospheric in chamber 16 the orifice 25 is opened and the pressures on opposite sides of the diaphragm tend to equalize so that the spring 29 moves the valve member 21 to reduce exhaust gas recirculation. When the pressure in chamber 16 is above atmospheric the orifice 25 is closed by the valve member 26 and the valve 21 is moved by the diaphragm 17 to increase recirculation. In operation with the throttle valve 8 substantially fully closed or wide open or with the bi-metallic below a predetemined temperature the valve member 21 prevents recirculation whereas with the chamber 16 connected to the orifice 33 the valve member is positioned to provide substantially constant pressure at the orifice. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the diaphragm 18 is continuously subject to the pressure immediately downstream of the metering orifice (9A). The orifice (9A) contains a valve plug (51) which is operated by a spring-biased diaphragm (57). The diaphragm (57) is subject to intake manifold suction, to cause orifice opening, or atmospheric pressure to cause orifice closing, under the control of a valve (11A). The valve (11A) is controlled by a bi-metallic element (69) and a diaphragm (67) subject to the suction at the carburetter port 40. The valve 10 may comprise a poppet member (21A), Fig. 3 (not shown) connected by a stirrup-shaped member (73) to the hollow valve stem (23A) so that the stem is not in the path of the exhaust gas.
