Abstract

621,761. Chucks. VIDAL, C. H. Oct. 10, 1946, Nos. 30306/46 and 1638/47. [Class 83 (iii)] The jaws 31 of a self-centring bevel-closing chuck are moved radially inwards under axial pressure applied to the inner ends of the jaws by means which are mounted in the hollow chuck body and comprise an axially-guided plunger 20, Fig. 1, and a lever 24 arranged between an end face of the plunger and an abutment fixed against movement along the axis of rotation, the lever being adapted to be tilted in relation to the said axis so as to vary its effective length. The abutment for the lever consists of a spherical seating 13 which is formed in the chuck body and is engaged by a part-spherical portion 25 on the lever. The outer end of the lever is engaged by one or more threaded plugs 17 which constitute the means for adjusting the lever and operating the jaws. The sleeve 33 of the chuck has an internal thread to engage a threaded part of the chuck body to provide for additional relative axial movement between the sleeve and the jaws 31. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, one end of the lever 24 pivotally engages the plunger 20, while the other end engages an operating member 39 constrained to move transversely of the chuck by means of a threaded plug 43.
