Abstract

729,939. Wrenches. SOC. ANON. DES FORGES STEPHANOISES. Oct. 6, 1952 [Oct. 26, 1951; May 16, 1952], No. 25024/52. Class 61. In a torque limiting wrench comprising a rigid rod 2 secured at its operative end to a flexible rod 6 along which a slider is adapted to move so as to define the free length of the flexible rod which is rigid with a control handle 15, the flexible rod is adapted to be moved away from the rigid rod in operation of the wrench and to thereby release a ring- shaped member 12 surrounding the outer end of the flexible rod and which is set before each operation of the wrench, the said ring being moved by a spring 14 longitudinally of the rod when released so as to produce an acoustic signal showing that the required torque is reached. The ring shaped member comprises a collar having a bead 12a of triangular section gapped at 12b for engagement by a pointed part 13 attached to the rigid rod 2. To set the wrench the collar is moved along the flexible rod and then moved angularly so that it is held by the pointed part 13 in the position shown in Fig. 5. The flexible rod 6 is positioned in a longitudinal groove 7 in the rigid rod 2. The annular slider 8 has an internal recess 8a and a curved cam surface 8b, angular movement of the slider causing the rod 6 to be wedged in the groove. In a modification the pointed part 13 is replaced by a blade. In another modification a slider is guided longitudinally on the rods and clamped thereto by two transversely aligned members having wedging faces which are moved perpendicularly to the axis of the rod by screw means. The handle grip 15 is secured to the flexible rod 6 by a screw 16.
