761,256. Plug gauges. BOWERS, G., and BOWERS, E., [trading as BOWERS & CO., T.]. Jan. 21, 1955 [Dec. 31, 1953], No. 36261/53. Class 106 (2). An adjustable plug gauge has a radiused head having two anvils 110, 111 abutting each other along inclined faces and adapted to move relatively to one another so as to enlarge or reduce the effective diameter of the gauge, means for adjusting the anvils to various positions so that the diameters of holes can be ascertained or the gauge pre-set before use, and locking means to lock the anvils 110, 111 against displacement. The abutting faces of the anvils slide over each other on an inclined plane 112, the anvil 111 being recessed at 113 to receive a tongue 114 on the anvil 110. The outer surfaces of the anvils are arcuate at 115 and 116. A hollow stem 117 which accommodates a draw bolt 118 is integral with the anvil 111 and has a threaded portion 119 with a locknut 120 at one end and a projection 121 at the other engaging in recesses 122, 123 in the anvils. The stem 117 is externally threaded at 124, adjacent the anvils, to carry a sizeadjusting nut 125. Two such gauges may be held, one in each end of a sleeve, secured by retaining screws. The setting is effected by releasing the locknut 120 and adjusting the nut 125 while sliding the anvils relatively to each other. The nut 125 holds the anvil 110 from any further movement up the inclined plane and by tightening the locknut 120 it is prevented from sliding down.
