Abstract

649,750. Chucks. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and WOOD, A. E. Oct. 26, 1948, No. 27769. [Class 83 (iii)] A chuck comprises a helical spring 5 which surrounds the tool and two members 1, 8 engaging opposite ends of the spring and relatively movable towards each other to cause an axial compressive force to be exerted on the spring, whereby the latter is maintained rigid with the chuck and is caused to grip the tool. The tool is received in a bore 2 of the body member 1 which is screw-threaded at 7 into the sleeve. The spring 5 is an easy fit in the sleeve 8 and, when the latter is screwed on to the body, the ends of the spring are forced into conical seatings 4, 12 on the body and sleeve and the tool is gripped by the spring. An end stop for the tool is provided by a stud 14 which is screw-threaded into the body 1 and held in adjusted position by a set-screw 16. If desired, only one of the members 1, 8 need be provided with a conical seating for the spring. As shown, the upper end of the body 1 is cranked for engagement and rotation by an eccentric or cam slot in the drill head.
