Abstract

621,498. Hydraulic presses; multiple-way valves. PRECISION DEVELOPMENTS CO., Ltd., BOX, F. J., and OLAH, G. Feb. 7, 1946, No. 3874. [Classes 69 (ii) and 135] Pressure liquid is exhausted from a hydraulic press &c. in two stages, first at a slow rate, during which the elastic strain in the press cylinder is relieved, and then rapidly. Fig. 2 shows a valve in which the flow from a press port 6 to an exhaust port 5 is controlled by a hand-operated piston 3 having a groove 12 connected by a radial hole 15 to a bore 13 communicating with a chamber 14 connected by a restricted passage 7, 8 to the exhaust port. In use, the valve is pushed inwards so that the groove overlaps the port 6 and liquid from the press flows into the chamber. and thence through the passage 7, 8 to the exhaust. The back pressure initially developed in the chamber arrests the movement of the piston. However, continued exhaust of liquid through the passage results in a fall in the back pressure until the inward stroke of the piston can be completed, thus permitting direct and full flow between the ports 6 and 5. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the valve is provided with a pressure liquid supply port 18 in addition to the exhaust and press ports 5, 6 respectively. In the position shown, the ports 6, 18 are both in direct communication with the exhaust port 5 through the bore 17 and the passage 21 respectively.
