954,676. Hydraulic pit props. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. Dec. 14, 1961 [Dec. 22, 1960; Feb. 3, 1961], Nos. 44098/60 and 4201/61. Heading E1E. [Also in Division F1] An hydraulic pit prop is provided with a pump 38, 52 adapted to supply fluid from a reservoir 44 through ports 43, a check valve 45 and a passage 23 to a pressure chamber 36. The, valve 45 may constitute a spring-loaded clack valve or a fall valve as shown which is opened by a stem 46 carried by the pump piston 38. The pump is actuated by a hand lever attached to a cross pin 51 having a lever arm engaging the pump component 52. Operation of the piston 38 over its full stroke causes the stem 46 to open the valve 45 and permit a port 47 in the piston to register with the ports 43 thereby interconnecting the chambers 36, 44. The prop also incorporates a relief valve 53 establishing communication between the chambers 36, 44 by way of passages 23, 57. The prop is initially raised by lifting the cylinder 10 to separate a piston 25 as shown from the valve housing 11 to establish direct communication between the chambers 36, 44 for which purpose the members 11, 25 are interconnected by a pin and slot connection 49, 48 permitting a limited axial movement therebetween. The upper and lower surfaces of the prop components are domed as at 14 and provided with a captive end cap 15 or 21.
