618,609. Rotary printing-machines. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO., Ltd. June 13, 1946, No. 17767. Convention date, July 11, 1945. [Class 100(ii)] Inking-apparatus. - A partially submerged fountain roller 17 carries a film of ink 32 which is picked up by a roller 18 having an unyielding outer surface formed with raised portions 18a having edges angled axially and in tight, indented, frictional contact with a yieldable-surfaced transfer roller 16 of a different diameter from roller 18. As shown, rollers 16 and 18 are made of rubber and steel respectively to afford a continuous contacting surface, and the ribs 18a dip into the ink film 32 without contacting the roller 17. The thickness of the film 32 is regulated by an adjustable blade 29 carried on a pivoted bracket 30, and the peripheral speed of the roller 17 carrying the ink is reduced to between 50 and 250 times that of the web depending on the viscosity of the ink by a double worm drive 33, 34 and 37, 38 connected together by a stub shaft 35 which may be thrown out of mesh in the event of the machine being used in the reverse direction when another stub shaft is positioned on the opposite side of the rollers (not shown). The bearings of the fountain roller 17 are below the surface of the ink which serves as the lubricant. Specification 548,641 is referred to.
