871,786. Printing machines. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A.G. Dec. 4, 1957 [Jan. 18, 1957], No. 37792/57. Class 100(2) A damping apparatus for a rotary lithographic printing machine comprises a damping liquid reservoir, a foam rubber surfaced duct roller partially immersed in the reservoir, a distributer roller contacting the duct roller and means for rotating the rollers so that the duct roller is rotated at a lower peripheral speed than the distributer roller whilst in contact therewith. The distributer roller 10 is in continuous contact with the duct roller 9 and is frictionally driven by forme rollers which are in contact with the plate cylinder and transfer damping liquid thereto from the distributer roller. The shaft 18 of roller 10 is the driving shaft of a variable speed transmission 14 whereby the duct roller 9 is rotated, the relative peripheral speeds of the rollers being adjustable by a handwheel 15 to vary the amount of liquid transferred from the roller 9 to the roller 10. A squeeze roller is mounted above the level of the liquid in the reservoir and can be adjusted against the duct roller 9 to provide an additional control of the amount of water transferred thereby. The rollers 9, 10 are laterally adjustable with repect to each other. The covering 13 of the roller 9 consists of non-absorbent foam rubber.
