In a rotary printing machine the inking system includes an inking drum, means for applying ink to the drum, two transfer rollers positioned around said drum in rolling contact therewith and two forme rollers arranged to receive ink from said transfer rollers respectively and positioned for rolling contact with the plate cylinder, said system further including means, operative during drum rotation, for periodically interrupting, and subsequently restoring, contact between the transfer roller which is nearer the ink application means in the direction of drum rotation and said drum to allow more ink to be carried to the other transfer roller for supply to the associated forme roller. The system shown comprises doctor, vibrator, intermediate and feed rollers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ink distributing drum 6, transfer rollers 7, 8, distributer rollers 9, 10 and forme rollers 11, 12, 13 and 14. In order to ensure an even distribution of ink from the drum 6 to the forme-rollers 11 . . . 14 the transfer roller 7 is automatically lifted from the drum, through the actuation of cam plate means associated therewith, during alternate half revolutions of the drum, thus allowing the transfer roller 8 to accumulate an amount of ink equal to that collected by the roller 7. The roller 8 receives this ink over two consecutive stages adding up to one-half revolution of the drum 6. By appropriate control the interruption of contact between the roller 7 or 8 and the drum 6 may be effected at any desired intervals, so that the ink application may be adapted to the printing plates being treated.
