793,790. Intaglio printing-machines. JONES, W. R. Feb. 23, 1956 [Jan. 7, 1955], No. 509/55. Class 100(2) A device for controlling the amount of ink allowed to remain in the recesses of an inked and doctored intaglio die stamp 1 for printing in relief comprises a roller 4 having a resilient surface 5, or supporting an endless band of resilient material, the resilient surface. being arranged to be rolled in contact with the die and to be cleaned by apparatus such as a trough 7 of white spirit; a scraper 3 adjustable in brackets 10 cleans the surface 5, to which cleaning solvent may be applied by direct immersion or through one or more intermediate rollers, and the amount of solvent applied is controlled by an adjustable squeegee roller 20. The device may be applied to a reciprocating bed machine, or as shown to a rotary machine wherein the pressure, against the die 1, of the surface of the roller 4 (carried in brackets 6 on the trough 7) is set by adjusting screws 8, 9; lever-and-cam mechanism, not shown, may be provided to move the roller into and out of operational position. The roller 4 may have a natural or synthetic rubber surface 5; it may be driven by contact with the die 1 or may have a positive drive bringing its surface speed into agreement therewith.
