Abstract

378,600. Rotary intaglio-printing- machines. NATIONAL BANK OF HUNGARY, 8, Szabadsag-ter, and HEINRICH, F. VON, 13, Marko-Utca, both in Budapest. June 25, 1931, No. 18358. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1930. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii).] A rotary intaglio-printing-machine prints on sheets which are fed from a board 14 by reciprocating grippers to grippers 11 on a chain 10 which is passed around an impression cylinder 8 coacting with a printing cylinder 1. Inking-apparatus.-The printing-plates are inked by rollers moving in a direction opposite to the plates, and supplied with ink from a roller 33 and a fountain 33b. Rollers 34 are used to rub in the ink, and reciprocating rollers act on the rollers 34 and scrapers remove ink from the reciprocating rollers. The inked plates are wiped by means of dry wiping apparatus 35, 36, and by wiping apparatus 37 in which a moistened band is used to apply moisture to the wiping bands. For multicolour printing sectional rollers supplied with different colours may be used, and the devices 33 .. 37 may all be in duplicate. The plate cylinder and wiping bands are so arranged that a final wiping by hand can be given to the plates, and the whole machine is arranged so that the printed products are visible. The wiper bands are led from rollers 125, Figs. 7 and 8, mounted in plates 110 connected by cross-bar 111 and attached to brackets 38 which are pivoted to sleeves 40 carried by step-on spindles 41, Fig. 2, by means of which the brackets 38 and with them the wiper bands are given rising and falling movements to open the printing cylinder, and also sinusoidal movements due' to a compound motion obtained by reciprocating cross slides 43 laterally of the motion of the plates 6 in guides 44 by means of eccentric mechanism which operates a rod 48 connected by a ball-joint 49 to the slide, the guide 44 being mounted on a circular slide 45 which is moved in a circular guide 46 by eccentric mechanism. The guide 46 is given a rising- and-falling motion by means of a pair of eccentrics which are operated by strikers on the printing cylinder which alternately rotate the eccentrics through half a revolution in opposite directions, and so raise or lower a slide 47 which carries the guide 46. The spindle 41 is driven by bevel gearing from a shaft 84 which drives a shaft 74 connected to the spindle 41 by means of an Oldham coupling 75 and a Hardy coupling 76 so as to drive the spindle in all directions of its adjustment. The spindle 41 is splined to a shaft 67 which does not move vertically, and a sprocket-wheel 69 on the shaft 67 drives a shaft which is connected by worm gearing to the shaft of the winding up roll 121, Fig. 1, and the feeding-out roll 114 of the wiper band. This band passes from a roll 125 into contact with a rubber band 124 driven from the roll 114, around a roll 115, under wiper pads 112, 113, under roll 80, over roll 81, and back to the roll 121 via rolls 114, 125. The rolls 80, 81 are carried by a spring-pressed slide, which is released in order to slacken the wiper bands when in contact with the ' plates by means of levers 77, Fig. 7, which engage the ends of the fixed shafts 67 as the brackets 38 descend to bring the wiper band into operative position. When moistening of the wiper bands is desired a moistening band W is led from a'roll 130, which contacts with an absorbent roll 133 in a trough 132, over rollers 129, 126, 127, 128, 131, and passes twice under the pads 112, 113. The roller 130 may be driven by worm gearing, or by a hand-wheel through a detachable coupling which can be readily dismantled when the moistening bands are not required. The pads 112, 113 are pressed towards the bands by adjustable spring pins 146, and are formed of elastic strips held at their upper edges by bent strips of metal 144 carried at their centres by holders 145 secured to the pins 146. The pads can thus conform to the surface of the printing- plates. The shafts 74 which operate the wiper bands are driven intermittently by bevel gears 71, 72, from a shaft 84, Fig. 10, which is driven by epicyclic gearing 85, 86, through a clutch 87, 88 which can be thrown out of operation by a lever arm 92 which is normally actuated so as to permit the clutch to operate intermittently. The arm 92 is normally clutched to a shaft which is oscillated by a lever arm with a roller which engages one of a series of cams of different lengths of operative surfaces, the lever arm being adjustable so as to engage the particular cam which effects the desired length of feed. A handle 90 permits of hand operation of the wiper band, and the lever 92 may be set so as to hold the clutch 87, 88 out of action. Printing-surfaces; delivery apparatus; setoff, preventing.-The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following additional features. The printing-cylinder 1 is formed with a number of detachable heated segments 4, Fig. 4 (Cancelled), to which are attached by means of clamps 5 flexible intaglio plates 6. These plates are preferably made of uniform thickness by grinding or cutting their backs while held by suction to a plane or cylindrical surface. The printed sheets are delivered face upwards into trays 17 carried by chains 19, which can be operated to bring an empty tray into position when the full tray 'is removed laterally. Sheets to prevent set-off are fed from a lateral table by grippers on reciprocating rods which are automatically opened by a stop on the machine frame, the set-off sheets being stripped off on to the printed pile by means of stops which are raised automatically to engage the rear edge of the sheet as the feed grippers return. The paper is damped prior to printing by means which permit of control of the amount of moisture applied and also of the position of the damping means. An endless moistening band 30 bearing on the impression cylinder is moved into and out of contact with the sheet by means of an oscillating lever 31 operated by an eccentric. The band 30 passes round rollers 28, 29, and is supplied from a spring-pressed pivoted trough 23, and rollers 24, 22. Moisture may be sprayed on to the paper, or may be delivered to the band 30, or to rollers which may be substituted therefor, by means of variable-stroke pumps, variable elevators, or adjustable wicks. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
