Abstract

905,453. Damping apparatus for printing- machines. MILLER PRINTING MACHINERY CO. Oct. 18, 1960 [July 12, 1960], No. 35644/60. Class 100 (2). Apparatus for dampening the plate 6 on a cylinder 5 in a lithographic offset printing press comprises a roller 4 in a fountain 2 containing water 3, a form roller 7 and a distributer roller 8 both rotating synchronously with the cylinder 5, and a metering roller 9 rotated by surface contact with the rollers 4 and 8. Roller 4 is driven independently at a slower speed than the roller 8 and since the roller 8 is at a lower elevation than roller 4, the roller 9 bears more on roller 8 and tends to be rotated at its speed. A reduction in the speed of the roller 4 decreases the quantity of water applied to the plate 6 and vice-versa. Roller 9 may be of metal with a knitted cotton sleeve 10. Roller 8 vibrates endwise relative to the rollers 7 and 9.
