Abstract

A printing unit for an offset rotary printing machine, having a plate cylinder 5, a blanket cylinder 2, an inking unit 8 for supplying ink to the plate cylinder and a dampening unit 15. In order to remove dirt and fibre particles picked up by the blanket cylinder, the dampening unit is arranged for applying dampening liquid onto the blanket cylinder during printing. Preferably, the dampening unit is arranged at a region of the blanket cylinder between the contact regions of the latter with the impression and plate cylinders. In use the dirt particles are removed from the blanket cylinder by the dampening unit before they can be carried round by the blanket cylinder to the plate cylinder where they would get mixed in with the ink. An application roller of the dampening unit may be driven at a different peripheral speed to that of the blanket cylinder. The damping liquid may be supplied in a recirculatory system and be passed through a filter during recirculation. <IMAGE>
