Abstract

918,068. Damping. DICK CO., A. B. July 27, 1961 [Nov. 4, 1960], No. 27274/61. Class 100 (2). A lithographic printing-machine having a lithographic plate cylinder 12 and an inking system 14 including a plurality of ink rollers for supplying ink to the lithographic plate on said cylinder, comprises a fountain 54 for holding a supply of ink-repellent 56, a fountain roller 58 in said fountain, a ductor roller 60 engageable with said fountain roller, said ductor roller having a surface which is receptive to the ink repellent but is not receptive to the ink, and means for intermittently moving the ductor roller 60 into engagement with an ink roller 50 so as to supply ink-repellent to the plate by way of the inking system. The machine includes an off-set cylinder 18 and an impression cylinder 20 and ink 24 is applied to the plate by rollers 46, 48 via fountain roller 28 and rollers 32, 38, 40, 42 and 44, roller 50 being inked by roller 46. The roller 60 is mounted on a first carriage 62 which is swingable about pivots 64 carried by a second carriage 66 which is itself swingable about a shaft 68 mounted in fixed brackets 70. Springs 72 bias the roller 60 against the roller 58 and a spring 100 biases the roller 60 against the roller 50. The movement of an eccentric cam 80 is transmitted by a follower lever 88 and a roller 96 to the carriage 66 which is thereby oscillated. The resultant oscillation of the roller 60 is rendered adjustable by mounting the lever 88 on a pivot 102 which is eccentrically secured to a rotatable shaft 104 so that the action of the roller may be varied to provide continuous or intermittent transfer of the inkrepellent to the plate via the rollers 50, 46, 44 and 48. The carriage 66 may be swung out of reach of the lever 88 by a cam 110 when the machine is to be shut down. The roller 60 is formed with a chromium surface which is given a matte finish by sandblasting, etching or buffing. The surface may alternatively be of aluminium or zinc.
