[Class 100 (ii).] Inking - apparatus.-A travelling-roller inking- apparatus for a platen printing- machine comprises a large inking-roller and a small inking- roller, with a distributing roller in contact with both rollers. A cam may be provided on the roller carriage to hold the smaller roller out of contact with the forme but to allow it to engage the ink-supplying cylinder at the end of the stroke of the carriage. The carriage 1, reciprocating on guides 6, is provided with sliding spring-pressed bearings 7, 8, 12 supporting large and small inking-rollers 2, 3 and a distributing roller 15 respectively. At the upper end of the stroke of the carriage, the rollers 2, 3 contact with an ink-supplying cylinder 25. A bar 16, slidably mounted on the carriage, and normally held in a raised position by a spring 19, is provided with a cam projection 22 adapted to co-operate with the bearing 8 to hold the roller 3 out of contact with the forme so that the forme is inked only by the roller 2 which however receives additional ink from the roller 3 by means of the roller 15. When the carriage 1 is at the end of its upward stroke, the bar 16 engages the frame 24 and is depressed to allow the roller 3 to engage the cylinder 25. By removing the spring 19, the bar 16 may be rendered inoperative and both rollers 2, 3 serve for inking the forme.
