618,056. Knitting machines. HEMPHILL CO. March 21, 1946, No. 8772. Convention date, March 22, 1945. [Class 74(ii)] Mechanism for varying the length of loops to facilitate fashioning of a stocking in knitting - machines comprises a pivoted arm 15 engaging adjustable cams 7, mounted in a disc 1 on the auxiliary cam shaft and supporting a slide 21 connected to a knitting cam block 19. Rotation of the disc 1 presents the cams 7 to the arm to vary the position of the cam block 19 and effect variation in the loop length. The invention is described in connection with a machine of the circular independent needle type in which the cams 7 have spherical surfaces 10 and are supported in a flange 2 of the disc 1 by a screw-threaded shank 9 and prevented from rotating by a fibre block 5 pressed against the shanks 9. The cams engage an adjustable screw 17 in the end of the arm 15 which may be adjusted to vary the position of the cam block without altering the position of the cams. Indexing means may be provided on the cams 7 and screw 17 to indicate their positions. Specification 613,511 is referred to.
