Abstract

617,903. Making shoes. MURRAY, A. E. March 12, 1946, No. 7650. Convention date, Sept. 17, 1945. [Class 17 (ii)] In the manufacture of a shoe for fitting an individual foot a support is made substantially conforming to the shape of the bottom of the foot, an upper is built on the foot while on the support, and the support is removed and replaced by plastic material, said plastic material being conformed while mouldable to the bottom of the foot and then allowed to set. A supporting pad 1, Fig. 12, is made by cutting a pair of sheets 10 of monks cloth to the shape of the plan outline of the foot and uniting the edges by placing on a larger similarly shaped sheet 11 of the monks cloth, the margin of which is folded over and adhesively secured to one of the sheets 10. Each laver of monks cloth is coated on one side with a layer of self-vulcanizing rubber or rubber substitute and adhesion between the sheets 10 and the sheet 11 is obtained by dusting with plaster of Paris the surfaces to be contacted. Cotton flocking, sand, wood flour, sawdust, or other material is then packed between the sheets 10 through a slit in one sheet which is subsequently sealed. A sheet of monks cloth 14, Fig. 19, is placed on the pad 1, and the foot is now placed on the layer 14 and the latter is pushed up into the shape of the foot,. The margin of the layer 14 is then folded downwardly and adhesively secured to the lower margin of the pad 1. The front piece 17, Fig. 18, of the upper, and the heel piece 22, formed of monks cloth, are adhesively secured at their lower margins to the layer 14, the heel piece 22 over-lapping and being adhesively secured to the margins 19 of the portion 17. A heel and arch reinforcing strip 23 is then applied and adhesively secured. Covering pieces of terry cloth or flexible leather 25 (not shown), 26, Fig. 2, are now adhesively secured to the pieces 17, 22 and the outer surfaces of the terry cloth are dusted with plaster of Paris and coated with self-vulcanizing rubber or rubber substitute. When the surfaces have set the pad 1 is removed from the shoe and replaced by a laver of plastic material, e.g. a mixture of neoprene, cork flour, balsa wood flour and pine wood flour. A burlap piece 27 and a layer of terry cloth 29 are adhesively secured to the under-surface of the plastic material ; and finally the edge of the upper is cut to shape and eyelets inserted for the reception of laces.
