Compound fabrics. - Strengthening and/or stiffening materials which may be employed as toe puffs or insoles for boots and shoes, or with leather, fabric, or other flexible materials, and comprise a plurality of layers bound together by being coated or impregnated by an adhesive which will not set or harden till exposed to the air are characterized in that one or more of the layers is composed of a waste material, known as flushing, suitably reinforced. Flushing is a coarse, loose, felted material of poor quality. This is cut into the shape of a toe puff, &c., and impregnated with a celluloid composition, and reinforced by upper and lower layers of paper, muslin, or a cheap canvas-like material known as scrym. When in use, the whole is bound to the article with which it is used by the celluloid passing through the coarse-textured outer material, or portions of the inner impregnated material may be exposed. The stiffener may be waterproofed.
