[Class 17 (ii).] Fibrous sheet material acting as a vehicle for a substance applied to it prior to its introduction into the shoe and which will be operative in securing the stiffener in position is interposed between a shoe-end stiffener and the adjacent fibrous material of the upper. The stiffener may comprise a fibrous vehicle impregnated with a stiffening material which hardens in the shoe by drying or by cooling, and a piece of sheet material, coated on its puff-engaging side with a cementitious substance which will unite the upper and stiffener before lasting commences, may be sewn into the upper. Alternatively, one piece of fabric only may be used, and this need not cover the stiffener, and the heat treatment may not be necessary.
